How Can I Import My Email Into a New Client?

  1. Sign in to Gmail. Click the gear  in the top right.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

  4. At IMAP Access, select Enable IMAP.

  5. Browse to Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

  6. Select Allow Less Secure Apps: ON.

  7. Download Mozilla Thunderbird.

  8. Set Thunderbird up to connect to Gmail with an IMAP connection.

  9. Unzip the EML files into a folder on your computer and import them into local folders in Thunderbird.

  10. Select : File -> New -> Existing Mail Account

  11. Input your account information, Thunderbird will automatically configure your Gmail connection.

  12. In Thunderbird, drag and drop the messages from your local folders to the Gmail folders.

If you don't want to continue using the client, but want to stick with the Gmail web interface, remove your Gmail account details from Thunderbird. However, as Thunderbird will stay in synch with your Gmail account, it can provide a useful backup.
