How Do I Make a Copy of a Google Doc?

If you have been invited to a Google Doc which has the word, template or master in the filename, you must make your own copy or you will be using the master. To avoid that pitfall, follow these steps.

1. In order to copy the document, open the template that has been shared with you. Go to the File menu of that document (upper left) and then click on "Make a copy…”

2. Enter a new document name. Replace the words “Copy of …” with a filename that makes sense to you. Once you make your own copy, no one else will have access to it until you share it. Note that Share with the same people is un-checked so that you can be more deliberate about whom you choose. Click OK.
